Ajijic Carnival and the Sayacos – February/March

February 17, 2026
Ajijic - Carnival and Sayacos

Ajijic’s Carnival is an explosion of color and energy, led by the famous Sayacos who take over the streets with papier-mâché masks, wild wigs, mismatched clothes, and lots of flour. For several Sundays, especially Carnival Sunday, the neighborhoods and town center turn into a giant open-air stage: parades, bands, dance groups, and community contingents fill the streets with movement and laughter. Flour flies everywhere, and both locals and visitors receive the playful “Carnival treatment” as everyone gets covered in white. Beyond the fun, Carnival is a tradition that temporarily breaks social rules, uses humor to critique, and strengthens local identity, where “being a Sayaco” is a point of pride. Stay at Hotel Casa Blanca Ajijic and enjoy Carnival and its Sayacos from the very heart of town.
