Day of the Dead – November 2

On November 2, Ajijic honors its departed loved ones in a celebration full of color, fragrance, and emotion. From early morning, families visit the cemetery to clean and decorate graves with marigolds, candles, photos, favorite foods, drinks, and meaningful objects. The atmosphere is peaceful yet lively, with prayers, quiet conversations, and shared memories. In the main plaza, schools and community groups build altars that blend pre-Hispanic and Catholic symbolism—pan de muerto, sugar skulls, incense, water, salt, and multi-level structures representing the journey of the soul. At night, a procession of Catrinas and Catrines moves from the cemetery to the lakeside malecón, where the “Axixic Vive” festival offers dance, music, theater, and storytelling honoring the dead. The lakeshore is lit with candles and flowers, creating a mystical scene. Stay at Hotel Casa Blanca Ajijic and experience Day of the Dead from the heart of this unique tradition.
