Holy Cross Day – May 3

On May 3, Ajijic fills with beautifully decorated crosses made from flowers, fruit, colorful paper, ribbons, pan Tachihual, and even bottles of tequila. Holy Cross Day honors construction workers but has become a celebration embraced by the entire community. Crosses are placed on the roofs of new buildings, on home altars, on façades, and in public spaces, turning the town into an open-air gallery of devotional folk art. Families invite friends and neighbors to visit their altars, say a prayer, and share food. Mariachi or band music often plays in the background, and community meals are organized with dishes like birria, crispy tacos, beans, handmade tortillas, and refreshing aguas frescas. Stay at Hotel Casa Blanca Ajijic and explore Holy Cross Day on foot, discovering colorful altars throughout town.
